Random Long Update

I feel I should update. I've been writing a lot on AnimeVice--feeding my academic anime nerd. I really want to be an avid journal writer; the computer certainly makes things much easier; yet somehow I never find time or rather effort to blog. I keep thinking about what Virginia Woolf once said to her nephew, it was something along the lines of "Write about everything you did today. Even if you did nothing. Everything is important." The more I learn about VW, the more I love and admire her and all her craziness. Orlando was the most wonderful book; definitely my favorite-- maybe because of the magical realism, the historical fiction and fantasy aspects. I have to see the movie all the way through; Dr. Henke showed us clips in class, and I was hooked.

Reading on Mormons and the threat to 19th century American culture--very interesting. It all comes down to the notion of women's consent. I want to read some anti-polygamy novels now. Gotta write up a short, informal prospectus for 19th century lit on depictions of Native Americans in Child, Sedgewick, and Sigourney's writings.

Can't believe spring break is almost here! Going back to Paducah to get more stuff and move it to Louisville. Our house is empty--all our stuff is in the garage and at Neal's house. The movers have to unpack everything and put the stuff in their boxes though. :( Last week was so stressful; we had to have the house cleared by Monday. Went home Friday and worked almost non-stop with little sleep. We officially have a new house in SC--it's beautiful! It's larger than Neal's house, but my Mom and Neal bought it for the same price per square foot as Neal's house sold for! Tiger (our cat) is learning to get along with Sophie (our new dog); he's been a single pet for a long time.

I let go of a lot of stuff that I'd been saving for years. I went through all my old notes, read them, and threw a ton of them away. I kept the really funny notes and the notes that mentioned some important event at the time. I also found a lot of old pictures which were equally hilarious to see. I'll post some in the future.

I realize why I'm an English major. My life is defined through books. I packed at least ten boxes full of books--big boxes. There's one that's pretty much full of children/early teen books (i.e. Babysitter's Club, Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew). I know I don't read them anymore, but I want to save them for my kids. Plus, it was always my dream to have a personal library ala Beauty and the Beast with books from every genre for any age. These books shaped my character and ideas growing up. I would give up almost everything I owned if it meant I could keep all my books.

Funny though, the one book I didn't pack with the others because I want to read and use it in my final research paper for 19th century lit is no where to be found. I put it in a box that I was certain I was going to take and remember that it held my book. I forgot about it, and now have no idea where the book is. I'm just going to end up ordering another used one from Amazon.

Bad Day, Celtic Woman, and Oreos

Rough day more than bad. Totally missed the mark with my response for Chaucer class. Plus mixed up Richard I (Lionheart) with Richard II aloud and in front of the whole class. Had to juggle twenty million different things today because my schoolbag wasn't big enough, and I'm not "an octopus with eight lovin' arms" (kudos if you get the reference); still dropped almost everything. Lost an earring from my ear that was of real monetary value not to mention a favorite. Totally forgot the significance of 1910 in my Virginia Woolf class which is only one of the most important dates I have to remember; again, I looked like an idiot. I had to wear pantyhose today and got a run in them.

Then I called Dustin to confirm transportation plans after class; we were supposed to see Celtic Woman together (rather I bought tickets and guilted him into coming). He said he was sick with stomach pain, and didn't feel up to going. Called my good friend Lisa who happened to be nearby and who I usually hung out with after class on Tuesdays; she was more than willing to go. The show was amazing and beautiful! Totally mitigated everything that happened. They performed mostly cover songs; it seemed the show was catered to an American audience more than ever before. The way these songs were arranged though, it was as if I was hearing them for the first time.  I missed several of the older celtic songs, but since the departure of some of the members, they couldn't be performed...at least not yet by the replacements. I think my favorite solo performance was by Lisa Kelly; she did a gorgeous and moving cover of "Fields of Gold." Of course my favorite group performance was "Mo Ghile Mear" well tied with "Isle of Hope." Lisa loved the show and cried. Then she treated me to Denny's because we were both hungry and nothing else was open and close by that we could get a big meal at.

Now I find that Dustin has eaten nearly all the Oreos since we bought them which was Sunday. Two of the three rows are all gone. I have eaten three oreos max. OMG! At least there's still a row left of them; they're spring oreos with yellow frosting, though I think the cookie texture is different---less crunchy.

To sum it all up: My day was bad, but it was mitigated by Celtic Woman, but now the day or rather new day is being put into question by the lack of Oreos.

For a long time I was convinced I was born in the wrong time period. I felt I should've been in the 13-15th century of sorts. I always want to be a writer of historical fiction. So why can't I write a 3 page "creative essay" pretending to be a knight who heard St. Bernard preach at Vezelay and goes home to convince his wife why he should go on crusade?

Feeling a little overwhelmed with grad school; there's good reason why they say take three classes at a time. Plus, I went into mini-career crisis mode (still slightly there) thinking what's all this for? Do I really want to be a Medievalist and devote my life to the academy? I felt better and more confident in my choice to be a Medievalist after meeting with the Med-Ren faculty candidates. Both were awesome and great for motivating me.

Mom got a new job in South Carolina! It's about 6 hours from Louisville and 5 hours from Raleigh, NC (where my dad lives). Things are kind of crazy now. I've got to move everything I've ever owned and furniture I want to keep from Paducah to Louisville by the end of March; Mom wants the house empty when she sells it. Neal and Mai are staying behind to settle things in Paducah, pack, and wait for my mom to find a house in SC. I'm happy she got a job finally and in a place closer to Raleigh where she really wanted to be and where my dad lives. So when I go to visit her, I can also make the drive to visit my dad easy. Means, I'll be going home to see my family less often and not going to Paducah as much--which kind of makes me sad.

OhayhoCon was fun in someways, stressful in others, and a little bit disappointing for a first con. My Devout cosplay was awesome though--Dustin sewed the dress in two days and Simon's wife Aree made the sleeves and fixed the collar in a couple hours. I'll post pictures eventually, once I get batteries for the camera. I'm trying to think of ideas for a panel because my good ole academic self wants to run one. I'm thinking of talking about gender construction/bending in anime; the panel I went to on gender & sexism in anime only talked about women/men in terms of sex.

Been on a huge anime kick lately. Bought Ah! My Goddess season one at the con and ploughed through it in two nights. Then went through the first season of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles in three or four days. Taking it slow on season two of Tsubasa though--mainly because I'm so behind. ^^;;

"She [Judith] is a virgin because she is a widow."

Dr. Rabin's response: "In my experience, virginity is a one-shot thing."

Way to go self! What I meant by that statement was that Judith is reinstated to the status of a virgin because she is a widow; her chastity is supposed to have been restored. I got an A- on my paper though, and Rabin said it was a good paper overall.

It's a little frustrating trying to write Med/Ren/Anglo-Saxon lit papers. I have to think a whole different way now; I have to think like a historian and english major. I have to consider the historical context of everything and be very careful in my wording or I might end up mapping my 20th century ideas onto a text which is what I'm NOT supposed to do. It's hard to talk about fighting saints and warrior women and not want to use the word "hero." I'm currently balking a bit at the idea that I have to talk about Medieval texts in terms of what they did back in their time as opposed to what they do now.

Classes going okay. Little rough taking four, but I'm making it. Love Virginia Woolf and all her craziness. Heart me some Chaucer and Canterbury tales. Interviews with the Med-Ren faculty candidates and Ohayocon next week!

Most of the Devout dress is cut out, though not yet sewn together. I have a lovely hood made by Dustin. The cape will soon follow. Kitty ears to be purchased at the con. Lolita skirt needs some adjusting, so it's not sliding off because of the heavy weight.

Oh and last but not least, saw WICKED on Sunday and it was AMAZING, WONDERFUL, FABULOUS! Had the most amazing seats thanks to Cassie! Donna Vivino and Katie Rose Clarke were amazing as Elphaba and Glinda! I was tearing up quite a few times, though I didn't actually cry during the show. My favorite moment/song was when Donna sang "No Good Deed"--it was chilling, thrilling, terrifying, and so wicked witch like--in other words: perfect! I was in pure awe of her after that. Spent a large sum of money on merchandise--had to restrain myself from donating $40 dollar for Broadway Fights Aids charity so I could get a poster signed by the entire cast. In the end, I bought a tour shirt for Mai, a really cute green shirt with "Wicked" and embellishments on it, and a world tour book.

I should be reading "Sketches of the Past" by Virginia Woolf right now...

I finished the General Prolouge to the Canterbury Tales; my Middle English is still pretty decent but I could use a good pronunciation guide and brush up. The copy I have from the library lacks that. The Riverside Chaucer has one but it's checked out and I have to order it online and wait.

I need to get to work on my FFIII Devout cosplay for OhayoCon. I'm so excited about the con for two main reasons at the moment: 1) A lot of the voice cast for Ouran High School Host Club will be there! 2) Gothic Lolita teaparty! I'm falling more and more in love with Gothic Lolita fashion and finally found a site that caters to American Lolitas!

Going to see Wicked on Sunday!!! OMG!!! SQUEE!!!

I watch way too much TV and need to get back into reading.

I'm tempted to switch to being a Humanties major because it would fit in so much easier with the Med-Ren certificate, and I'm sure they have a better variety and selection of classes because it's pretty much free for all. However, I'm very much enmeshed in the English grad program and have no desire to switch, play catch up, and graduate later than planned.

Dr. Rabin asked me to stop by his office to take a look at the info on the applicants for the new Med-Ren faculty position in the English department! One of the first looks at possible future professors in my field of study! It's nice to think that Dr. Rabin, one of the most hard-core professors ever, values my opinion!

Okay, no more procrastination! It's time to immerse myself in the crazy world of Virginia Woolf!
